Mountain Park Church (MPC) is a vibrant church with an average attendance (pre-COVID) of 1800 in beautiful Ahwatukee, an affluent area within sunny Phoenix, Arizona. Starting as a church plant about 30 years ago, MPC has continued to expand its reach and recently built a new facility. The local community features excellent schools, abundant sports and outdoor activities, beautiful desert surroundings, and a health-conscious culture. Mountain Park is voluntarily affiliated with the Church of God (Anderson) and affirms the role of women as teachers and leaders within the church.

POSITION SUMMARY

The mission of Mountain Park Church is to invite the distracted and the disinterested to realize their role in God’s story. In pursuit of this mission, we are equally committed to reaching the unbelieving with the love and truth of Jesus and cultivating spiritual growth and maturity in his followers. Under the headship of Jesus, the Senior Pastor acts as the principal advocate and model for the church’s mission by inspiring, mobilizing, and equipping individuals and families to fully realize their role in God’s story. This includes providing missional leadership (especially as related to discipleship), leading a dynamic teaching ministry while serving as the primary teacher, and representing MPC in the community. The Senior Pastor reports to, and serves on, the Board of Servant Leaders (BOSL) and welcomes the support, accountability, and guidance they may provide.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Missional Leadership

• Maintains a healthy, growing relationship with Jesus Christ that sets an example for those we serve and aligns with the mission and beliefs of Mountain Park Church

• Fulfills the great commission by mobilizing attenders and non-attenders to realize their role in God’s story, one step at a time

• Promotes a culture – among staff and congregants – that reflects the discipleship priorities of the church and mobilizes others to take personal ownership of MPC’s mission, beliefs, and teachings through personal relationships, sermons, gatherings, and overall lifestyle

• Takes responsibility for the spiritual growth of the church body, defining and tracking goals and milestones while also self-evaluating for wins and ways to improve

• Leads, develops, and structures a thriving ministry staff that cares for, supports, and spurs one another on in our shared mission

• Recognizes contributions of staff and key leaders and collaborates with them to accomplish organizational vision and mission while initiating personal growth in staff through instruction, training, mentorship, growth opportunities, etc.

• Assures clarity of mission, vision, and strategy for all employees; sets priorities and engages in both group and one-on-one interactions to provide the necessary leadership and guidance

• Develops relationships with congregants to stay connected with the needs of the body

• Participates in the life and ministries of the church (such as mission trips) as time allows

• Establishes and maintains strong relationships with the Board of Servant Leaders through regular status updates with regards to plans and progress and seeks their input when needed to resolve conflict and/or to ensure healthy working relationships

• Regularly seeks God’s will and direction for teachings that are needed by the church

• Maintains a biblical scope and sequence that aligns with the discipleship strategy of MPC

• Collaborates with the Creative Worship Arts Pastor to create and direct content and services that are biblical, creative, relevant, current, and engaging to a diverse group of people

• Serves as the primary teacher of MPC, effectively teaching Scripture at services, events, and gatherings in an engaging manner (for both mature Christians and those who are still seeking) that inspires tangible life change

• Schedules regular study time to keep spiritual depth and Biblical insight

• Maintains integrity of Biblical interpretation in curricula and teachings throughout MPC ministry areas consistent with our statement of faith

• Provides scriptural content both through messages and other resources that incorporates both mature Christians and seekers

• Leads the development of MPC’s devotional journals, preparing message summaries and ensuring staff writers are appropriately equipped

• Seeks pathways to expand the reach of the teaching ministry beyond Sunday services (could include social media, podcasts, written resources, mid-week discipleship, etc.)

• Develops theological statements, pastoral guidelines, policies, and other written resources (including website and social media copy) that express and/or explain the mission and strategy of Mountain Park as needed

Community Representation

• Assumes the role of primary spokesperson for senior level church issues for both public relations and community leadership

• Develops effective and on-going partnerships with external ministries and their leaders

• Visits and consults with other churches, ministries, and organizations to help MPC learn and grow

• Assumes responsibility for dealings with the national and state offices of the Church of God (Anderson, IN)

QUALIFICATIONS

Essential Experience and Education

• MDiv or equivalent experience

• At least five years of pastoral leadership (including oversight of paid staff) Preferred Experience and Education

• Five years of pastoral leadership in church with an average attendance of 1200+

• Proven track record of managing staff to high levels of performance and motivation

• Personal experience with processes that facilitate church growth and church health

• Past success in creating and developing new ministries as well as recruiting and growing volunteer teams and leaders

• Ordained or willing to be ordained in the Church of God (Anderson, IN)

ESSENTIAL QUALITIES

• Basic computer skills, experience with or ability to learn Mac software

• Strong organizational and problem-solving skills, able to manage multiple priorities simultaneously

• Possesses the right combination of confidence, ingenuity, and humility to complete top priority tasks in a team environment

• Effective communicator and relationship-builder

• Approachable, respected, and trusted by the staff

• Skilled and experienced in leading staff and/or volunteers towards a common mission

• Personal drive to be a self-starter with initiative and a strong work ethic

• Enthusiasm and joy – a naturally “bright” face and smile – and a positive attitude that motivates and encourages others
